Qatar's social infrastructure making good progress

The main focus of Qatar’s building programme may be transport, malls and sporting stadia, but its social infrastructure is also developing well, according to an industry expert.

A number of key infrastructure contracts have been awarded by Ashghal this year, but Ezzat Ragab, CEO of Harrison International, says important social infrastructure is also making good progress.

“The social infrastructure in Qatar is progressing, there are schools, universities, housing, and hospitals are being built for the last couples of years. I think there are enormous efforts and investments from the government in the social infrastructure scheme,” he told Construction Week Qatar.

“These efforts need to be coordinated and integrated with the overall strategic plan for Qatar 2022 program. Each individual organisation that is involved in the social infrastructure needs to be talking the same language, sharing the same vision, this is what I meant by integration and coordination.

Schools will receive a major portion of the spend, with the government keen to increase its focus on primary and secondary education systems. Accordingly, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) will construct 69 new schools and kindergarten. Contracts worth USD 548 million (QAR 2 billion) have already been awarded for the construction of 44 new schools.

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has been established in Nov 2002 to direct the nation’s education policy and play an integral role in the development and implementation of the education reform effort.

The mission of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development is to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world and to position Qatar as a leader in innovative education and research. Qatari schools started incorporating e-Learning into their curriculum this year.
