ProjectQatar 2014 rides high on a construction bonanza

“Constructionahead” signs, traffic cones and construction workers in uniform have become themost common observations a commuter will come across when drivingDoha’s roads.

Qatar has embarked on an extensive infrastructure program on the path towardsfulfilling its Vision 2030 and preparations for the
FIFA World Cup 2022. Over the past months, much media attention has been focused on Qatar,as it started awarding billions of USD worth of contracts mainly related totransportation projects like the Doha metro, roads, bridges, tunnels, drainageand last but not least for the stadia where thefootball matcheswill be held. Thus, far, the emphasis has been on infrastructure, thecost of which could exceed $300 billion by the time vision of this great nationnears realization.

Actually, Qatar has been the world’ssurprising growth story, largely outpacing other major industrialized countrieson the strength of a vast oil & gas reach, and visionary economic policiesthat have transformed the country into a money-spinning superpower.

However, as infrastructure works move ahead, thenext priorities can be expected to move towards more complex and integratedprojects, including water supply, sewers, power grids, telecommunications, hospitals, hotels, leisure venues, sports villages and civic buildings.

Middle Eastern and Gulf regions have foundthemselves in an exuberant situation following Qatar’s winning of the
World Cup bid, as opportunities opened up for not only governments but as wellcompanies, contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers vying for a slice of themulti-billion dollar pie.

Another significant advantage of this constructionfrenzy is the capacity of Qatar’sconstruction industry to deliver more sustainable infrastructure and greenbuildings. Qatar has already gathered considerable experience in sports’infrastructure and green practices having organized the
Asian Olympics, andother annual sporting events while simultaneously implementing compulsory greenbuilding codes on these and other projects.

Through 2022,
Qatar’s construction activityis expected to propel growth in demand for green buildingmaterials.  In addition to the increased demand for regular constructionequipment and building materials, continuing interest in environmentallyfriendly products is expected to increase the market share of most greenbuilding materials.

Solarpower productsare also to witness explosive growthbetween 2014 and 2022, driven by increasing installation of photovoltaicplants.

With such visions ahead, Qatar’sspending bonanza appears to need to extend beyond 2030 in order to implement them all.

It’s all good news for the participants of
Project Qatar 2014to be held from 12 to 15 May at QatarNationalConvention Center, Doha.
