Abdul Karim Al Aftan

Efforts to double electricity allocations to $11 billion in Iraq

Iraq's electricity minister has asked the parliament to more than double his ministry's budgetary allocations to $11 billion in 2014 to fund power projects.

Abdul Karim Al Aftan said the present USD five-billion budget approved for the ministry far lags behind needed power projects and the ministry's actual requirements in 2014.

"The minister said he had asked parliament to increase his ministry's budget allocations for 2014 from USD five billion to $11 billion," Al Sabah newspaper and the Iraqi Media Network said, quoting a statement by the minister's office.

"He told the parliament that the current budget does not cover more than 50% of the ministry's required funds for new projects to meet growing power needs in the country. He said there is an urgent need to build new power generation and supply stations in some residential areas," according to the media reports.

It quoted the minister as saying the additional funds are also needed to pay dues to contractors who have completed power projects over the past few years.
