December 16, 2013.The government of Basra, in Southern Iraq,has approved the construction of a two-pronged development which will feature a25story hotel and shopping mall as separate facilities. The project wasannounced by Basra’sinvestment authority Ali Gasib as a new measure in the city’s latest efforts toreconstruct.
The two projects were announced on theheels of Emaar Properties’ reporting plans to build a $3 billion ‘ErbilDowntown’ development in nearby Kurdistan.
Ali Gasib stated that the hotel will belocated near the Shatt Al ArabRiver in Southern Iraq while the shopping centre willbe near BasraSportsCity.Said Gasib, “We have approved theseprojects and would soon grant licenses for the investors. We are alsoconsidering permits for other projects in the governorate.”
